Video, sound and practical media skills for researchers and educators.

I'm an educator and audiovisual specialist in higher education. I'm interested in how technical skills are taught, learned and applied outside professional media environments.

What if a camera and a microphone were as ordinary a research tool as a notebook?

About

I'm Technical Advisor in the Department of Anthropology at Goldsmiths, University of London. I support students and staff with video, sound, editing and technical teaching.

My background is in video, photography, sound, editing and digital media, but my interest isn't technology for its own sake. It's how people learn to use it meaningfully.

Pedagogy runs through everything I do. I want to understand how people actually learn technical skills, not just how to demonstrate them: how they move from following instructions to making their own decisions, and how that learning happens in communities of practice.

Audiovisual education

I'm interested in practical ways of teaching audiovisual skills to researchers, students and educators:

Video
Cameras, composition and lighting, and how to make useful visual material.
Sound
Recording speech, interviews, conversations and environments clearly and purposefully.
Interviews
Using framing, sound, questioning and location to record better conversations.
Editing
How selection, structure, sound and rhythm shape meaning.
Fieldwork
Using video and sound as part of the research itself, not only to document results.
Audiovisual methods
What changes when research is conducted, communicated or experienced through audiovisual media.

Exploring audiovisual training for researchers

I'm exploring what practical audiovisual training for researchers and doctoral students could look like, covering the whole process from developing an idea and planning a recording to interviewing, filming, sound recording and editing.

I'd like to hear from people who teach, support or work with researchers.

Let's talk

I'm interested in conversations about audiovisual education, researcher development, technical pedagogy and the role of video and sound in research and teaching.
